I’m glad you bring this up.

The point of this post is that, at the level of local K-12 schools, it doesn’t really MATTER whether the Secretary of Education is competent, because the national Department of Education is just not very important to the day-to-day life of actual local schools. Regardless of whether DeVos is an incompetent failure or a secret genius, there’s just not very much she can do to affect K-12 schools.

The past few months seem to have proved me right. I’m not sure I believe the “DeVos is resigning soon” chatter (though I’ve heard it, too) because it’s all anonymous. But it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that she’s bad at her job. Yet, even with a bad Secretary of Education at the helm, my local K-12 schools are doing just fine. DeVos’s office simply doesn’t have enough power to affect them in any significant way. And that was my point in this post.
